Making a Metal Building Usable Year Round
Metal building and shop insulation turns a steel box that is an oven in summer and a cooler in winter into a space you can work in. Around Albuquerque that covers detached garages in the Heights, workshops on Rio Rancho lots, horse barns and hay storage in Corrales and the valley, and steel buildings out in Edgewood and Valencia County. Bare metal takes in sun all day and dumps heat fast on clear nights, so the building swings with the weather.
Why closed-cell foam fits steel
When warm, moist air touches cold metal, water condenses and drips. It happens on winter mornings, and it happens when a heated or cooled shop meets an uninsulated roof. Closed-cell foam bonds directly to the steel, insulates it, and keeps moist air off the cold surface, so the drip stops. HomeGuide lists closed-cell at R-5 to R-7 per inch and $3.00 to $5.00 per square foot installed. Because it is rigid, it also stiffens thin panels a little and closes the gaps at laps and fasteners where dust and wind get in.
Roof first, then walls
In a hot, sunny climate the roof takes the most heat, so we usually start there. Foam goes on the underside of the roof panels or between the purlins, then on the walls. If you are only heating a space part-time or mostly want shade from summer heat, a roof-only job may make sense. We size the thickness to how you use the building.
Wood-framed garages and shops
Not every outbuilding is steel. Stick-built garages and post-frame buildings with wood girts can be sprayed with open-cell or closed-cell, or insulated with batts or blown-in once walls are covered. Overhead doors and the gap at their edges are often the biggest leak; we point those out even though door seals are a separate item.
Agricultural buildings and permits
An equipment shed or hay barn has different needs than a heated hobby shop or a garage with a room above it. Building permits and code rules depend on how the space is used and where it is, so check with the city or county building office before you convert a barn or shop into living or office space. We can share the specs the inspector may ask for.
What to have ready
It helps to clear a working strip along the walls and move anything that cannot get overspray. Vehicles and equipment should come out. For barns, we plan around animals so they are out of the building while foam is sprayed and curing.

Metal Building & Shop Insulation Questions
Will spray foam stop my metal building from sweating?
Closed-cell foam applied to the steel keeps warm, moist air off the cold metal, which is what causes the drip. It works best with no gaps, so we cover laps and fasteners fully.
Should I insulate just the roof?
If summer heat is the main problem, a roof-only job gives the most benefit for the money. If you plan to heat or cool the space, walls should be done too.
How thick should the foam be on a shop?
It depends on whether you heat or cool the space and what R-value you want. Closed-cell reaches meaningful R-values in a couple of inches. We write the thickness on the quote.
Can you insulate a barn with animals in it?
Animals need to be out while foam is sprayed and while it cures. We set the schedule with you so they can move back once the building is ready.
